Mike Hoare, from Southmead, recently reached a ‘magic milestone’ with Johnson’s Workwear, having worked with the leading workwear supplier at its Bristol plant for 50 years.

Chris Sander, Johnson Service Group plc Chief Executive Officer said, "We congratulate Mike on this fantastic achievement and we are very proud to have him in our team. It is people like Mike whose loyalty, hard work and dedication to our company and our customers contribute to our continued success and growth."

Mike’s first job after leaving school was with a local butchers shop but, as he didn’t like it, his auntie told him about the laundry business where she worked, which was then known as Clifton Cleaning. After applying to work at the laundry plant and a successful interview, Mike joined the company when he was just 16 years old. "I started by putting sheets through the dryers but I really wanted to be in the washroom so, after 12 months, I asked if there were any jobs going in there. I transferred and have been working there happily ever since," said Mike. "One of the biggest changes I’ve seen over the years is the move from using manual processes to automatic machines," he added. "We used to have to wear rubber aprons and boots because we were pulling dripping wet washing through the spinner. Now we use powerful washer extractors. Even though it’s a hard job, I love it. I like the companionship and even met my wife at work."

Providing clean, professional workwear for customers in Bristol and beyond is a Hoare family affair. Between Mike’s wife Jennifer and his son Alan, who both currently work at the plant, they have racked up over 100 years of service. Two of his other sons have also been employed there.

Chris Belcher, General Manager for Johnsons Workwear Bristol, said: "Mike is amazing. Working for any company for 50 years is quite an achievement but, when the job is also physical, this is definitely a magic milestone. However, for Mike it’s just another ‘day at the office’. Rather than slowing down, he looks for difficult jobs. He’s been a supervisor for 35 years and his willingness to work hard alongside his team has earned him great respect from all his colleagues."
